Online Seminar: How to study contemporary democratic erosion?

As part of the activities of ARENAS, an online seminar entitled ‘How to study contemporary democratic erosion?’ will be organised on 3 July at 11:00 am by Nicolás Emanuel Olivares (CONICET-FC-UdG).

The seminar will offer answers to three key questions:

  • Is the concept of democratic erosion interchangeable with those of democratic deconsolidation or democratic regression?
  • What kind of connection is there between the terms, democratic erosion, new rights, and neoliberalism?
  • Is the concept of new rights interchangeable with those of neoconservatism or radical rights?

The seminar is organised by ARENAS and CEDID-UAB as part of the activities of the ARENAS Work Package 3, which they are leading. Work Package 3 considers the “Circulation of Extremist Narratives”. The team studies both the historical origins and the transformation in the last century of extremist narratives in different European countries (Spain, Italy, France, Germany, Finland, Hungary, Poland, Croatia, Slovenia), as well as the circulation of extremist narratives.

The work being done in Work Package 3 is fundamental to the overall ARENAS project. Without in-depth knowledge of the historical roots and circulation of extremist narratives, it is impossible to understand their impact and, even more so, to be able to develop responses to stop its roots among European citizens in the future.
