ARENAS presented at seminar in Sabadell, Spain

ARENAS Partner Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) will be one of the organisers and will be participating in a seminar, “Hate Sells, Hate Kills” on June 6th next.

Hate speech and neo-fascist narratives are increasingly spreading through the Internet and social networks, reaching millions of people around the world. Recently, the rise of far-right parties – openly contrary to democratic values – has accelerated this expansion and c

ontributed to its normalisation, trivialisation, and even legitimisation.

The event is organised by the Federation of the Sabadell Neighbourhood Association with the participation of the Sabadell City Council and ARENAS. Our project will be represented by Steven Forti, from the Department of Modern and Contemporary History in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at UAB.

The seminar features a morning of presentations and debates on the impact of hate speech and extremist narratives, and the mayor of Sabadell, Marta Farrés will introduce it. The themes that will be considered are Gender, racism, and social alarm: discursive strategies of the European far-right and Migrations and democracy: resisting hate, defending rights.

Steven Forti will moderate the sessions of two speakers, anthropologist Nuria Alabao and political scientist Gemma Pinyol, and participate in a round table with unions and entities from the third sector of Sabadell, a city of 220,000 inhabitants on the outskirts of Barcelona.
